Who Am I?
I am a firefighter, painter, and freelance graphic designer. I am a father. I play guitar but I am only slightly better than terrible. I am a homebody. I am just an ordinary guy trying to live an extraordinary life.
When I’m not saving kittens from trees…
I create original one-of-a-kind artwork. I have conventional training in watercolors, but my painting technique is very unconventional. My painting couples meticulous attention to detail with bold use of color and often limited palettes. The result is a style all its own. I divide my painting time between commissioned portraits and my own creations. I sell original paintings and prints and freelance as a graphic designer.
How I got here
I graduated from Radford University in 2000, majoring in Fine Art with a concentration in Graphic Design. While in college, I took every painting class offered in oil and watercolor. I was fortunate enough to study under international award winning watercolor artist Z. L. Feng, who greatly influenced my portrait work. After college, I worked for multiple government agencies producing both graphic and web design.
In 2004, I had a breakthrough when I painted a portrait of a musician I admired. The result opened the door to the watercolor technique for which I am now best know.
In 2007, I decided I needed a change and began the long journey towards a career as a firefighter. As a child, it was what I wanted to be “when I grew up.” It took many years to finally reach this goal, but I never gave up. This career change opened a new door and took my paintings in a new direction. The interest in my firefighting art was immediate and the demand for prints continues to grow. What started out as a random painting every couple of years, turned into an ongoing series, The Art of Fire, which has been my biggest seller to date. I feel blessed that I am able to work on projects that I truly enjoy. I am able to provide others with artwork unlike anything else out there, which they are proud to display in their homes, offices and fire stations. If you are looking for a special gift, look no further. There is no better gift than something that is completely one-of-a-kind.
